Field guidance

"My UHF radios are not talking."

The most common field headache, and it's almost never the hardware. Run this checklist before you blame the gear.

Most common cause

Two radios that won't pair are usually mismatched on one setting, not broken. Cross-manufacturer pairs especially need every parameter to line up exactly.

Frequency

Both radios on the exact same channel and frequency. A single digit off and they never hear each other.

Protocol

Match the air protocol across manufacturers, the most-missed setting on cross-brand pairs.

Power & antenna height

Enough transmit power for the distance, and the base antenna high enough for line-of-sight.

Interference

Other transmitters, terrain, and obstructions on the channel. Move, raise, or change channel to clear it.
